Wading boots
Sturdy boots worn over wader feet that provide grip and ankle support on slippery streambeds and river rocks.
Wading boots are worn over the built-in feet of stocking-foot waders, providing the traction, ankle support and durability that thin wader fabric cannot provide on its own. They are sized separately from regular shoe size to leave room for the wader's neoprene bootie underneath.
Sole choice is the biggest decision, since felt soles grip slick, algae-covered rocks very well but are banned in some regions over invasive species concerns, while rubber soles are more widely allowed and improved with add-on metal studs for extra grip on slippery streambeds. Ankle support also matters more than it does in a normal hiking boot, since wading on an uneven riverbed puts sideways stress on the ankle that dry-land boots rarely see.
A common mistake is buying boots true to shoe size without accounting for the wader bootie, resulting in a cramped, uncomfortable fit, or choosing a smooth rubber sole for fast, algae-covered rivers where studs or felt would grip far better. Rinsing and drying boots fully between trips also matters, both for the midsole's lifespan and to avoid spreading invasive species between waterways.
