Sighter material

Sighter material is a short, brightly colored section of monofilament built into a euro nymphing leader, positioned where the angler's eye naturally falls during the drift. Instead of a floating indicator, the sighter itself is watched for any pause, twitch or straightening that signals a take or that the fly has reached bottom.

Because tight-line nymphing keeps the leader off the water entirely, the sighter has to be visible against a moving river background, which is why it typically comes in high-visibility colors like fluorescent pink, orange or chartreuse, often alternated along the same section. Some anglers build multi-colored sighters so they can also judge drift speed against the color changes moving past.

A common mistake is mounting a sighter that is too short to read clearly at a distance, or choosing a single color that blends into bright sky or dark water depending on lighting. Learning to read a sighter's subtle movement, rather than waiting for an obvious pull, is one of the main skills that separates experienced euro nymphers from beginners.
