Leader
The clear, tapered length of monofilament or fluorocarbon tied between the fly line and the tippet.
A leader is a tapered length of clear line, usually monofilament or fluorocarbon, that connects the thick end of the fly line to the fine tippet and fly. The taper runs from a thick butt section down to a thin tip, which helps transfer the energy of the cast smoothly from the heavier fly line down to a nearly invisible tippet.
Leaders are sized by length, commonly 7.5 to 12 feet, and by the X rating of their tip, which relates to diameter and roughly to breaking strength. Shorter, heavier leaders turn over big streamers and weighted nymphs better, while longer, finer leaders present small dry flies more delicately on calm, clear water where fish can be easily spooked.
Buying the wrong taper for the technique is a common mistake, such as using a delicate dry fly leader to try to turn over a heavy streamer, which collapses instead of straightening out. Leaders also degrade with UV exposure and use, so replacing a leader each season, or sooner if it feels stiff or coiled, keeps knots and turnover reliable.
