# Best Wading Staffs Source: https://flyfishnest.com/best/best-wading-staffs Updated: 2026-09-15 Publisher: Fly Fish Nest. Our score is an editorial rating out of 10 (fit 35%, features 25%, build 20%, value 20%), not a customer rating. Method: https://flyfishnest.com/how-we-research#our-score A wading staff is the cheapest safety upgrade in fly fishing, turning two points of contact into three exactly when current, depth, or slick bottom threaten your balance. It also probes depth and bottom quality before you commit a step, which prevents more falls than it arrests. Staffs vary in build: folding models ride in a holster until needed, fixed staffs are stronger and always ready, and shaft material decides both weight and trustworthiness under full body load. We weighed shaft strength under real leaning force, since a staff that folds when loaded is worse than none, along with deployment speed, grip security with wet hands, tip traction on rock, and how well each carries when not in use. Packability matters, but never at the cost of rigidity. Our picks cover anglers in heavy freestone current, older waders who want steady insurance, and travelers who need a staff that disappears into a pack. ## Picks ### 1.
